never tell me the odds

Today I decided it would be a grand night to wear short shorts with thigh high socks.

I bought them when I joined a soccer league earlier in the fall.

Ha. Yes. I did make an attempt to participate in a sport-like activity. And the first game, I kicked and messed my foot up for months afterward. My foot got all swollen and I couldn't wear my heels! Augh.

I was definitely the coolest kid on the team, with my American Apparel thigh highs and inability to actually kick the ball, but that's beside the point. Point is: I've had these socks in my drawer and decided it was time to bust them out.

Never mind it's the dead of winter and super duper cold outside.

Okay, I wore tights underneath. But still.

I also wore a ton of new bling that I bought at Forever 21 and H&M today. I don't know why I just called it bling. I take it back. I even decided to give bracelets a shot again. I haven't worn any since I got the backs of my wrists tattooed. And that was about two years ago.

Needless to say, I looked really bad ass. And some random hipster girl at the bar told me so.

So it must be true.

cookies and cakes galore

I decided to bake a lot over the Christmas holidays. I like baking. It's precise and relaxing and I get to measure and the best part: it results in delicious cookies and cakes. Mmmm cookies.

I haven't been working since December 12. To be honest, I'm kind of going crazy. CRAZY. Luckily the holidays have kept me a little bit busy.

And the baking. Oh, the glorious baking!

I started off making chocolate chip cookies and gingerbread men last week. Then I followed those with orange-chocolate cookies. And yesterday I made two cakes: one for my family and another for S's family.

There were two other cookies I wanted to make, but I might tackle them tomorrow instead. Mum kept bothering me to making oatmeal raisin, and I had to explain to her that I only bake what I like. And I don't like oatmeal raisin cookies.

The cake for S and my family I found on a blog I follow: Whisk Kid.  I've been following her blog for a while and was excited to try out her cake recipe. She makes a rainbow striped cake, and I decided to turn it holiday themed.

I was horrified at the amount of egg whites I needed for both cakes: 32, and making the buttercream frosting made me realize I really need a stand mixer if I plan on baking more often. Which I do.

The cake is meant to be divided into six layers. I didn't have a scale and didn't think to use a measuing cup (duh), so the first cake (mine) ended up with four layers: two red and two green. After that, I decided that S's cake would just be red, and the white layers of icing would make it look like a candy cane. Right? Wrong. W-R-O-N-G WRONG.

It turns out you need an awful lot of food colouring to make a cake a deep, rich red.

It also turns out that I made a hot-pink cake for S and her family.

Hot freaking pink.

It looks awesome, but still. Hot. Pink.

PINK.

pamela klaffke

Pamela Klaffke takes really awesome pictures. See:

These were taken with a Holga and I'm a huge lover of Holga cameras. I have one that I really need to bust out and use more often. It just sits on my shelf, looking all awesome.

Here is a link to her site. She takes really rad photographs and writes too. Her debut novel comes out in January. High five!

I don't know what this is, but I like it.

nom nom nom

This is a Bengal tiger kitty during feeding time. He is saying: FEED ME. ROAR ROAR ROAR. But in the last one, I think he's just dancing.

They're still blurry, if you were wondering.

I went to another of my brother's shows. This time they finally played in Oakville. I was super stoked. I took Maddie with me and we had a grand ole time. We even taught the bartender chick how to make Blue Lagoons. Knowledge is power!

*star swipe*

Anyway, I'm still waiting on a better lens and flash (soon, my pretties, soon), so I took some more fantastically blurry photographs. Johnny wore this big furry hat that made me think of Jesse Lacey of Brand New the last time he was in Toronto in 2006, so I ended up taking a lot of pictures of him. That and I was standing closest to him, so he was just the easiest person to take photographs of at the time. Yeah.

awesome person of the week #1: Karen Iwachow

This is Karen. She is awesome. She also doesn't have very many photographs of herself online, so that one will have to do. In fact, she doesn't even have Facebook, which I am very impressed by. I am not sure if I could survive without Facebook. I am not sure if it is a good or bad thing that I am admitting that.

Bad, I'm sure.

But enough about me! Back to Karen.

I like Karen. We met because of her equally awesome boyfriend, Troy Moth. He's a very cool photographer, and so is Karen. She takes bad ass pictures of people and places and edits them into squares and I like that.

Karen has a cool cat named Tuna and he is smarter than you. She also likes owls and Taking Back Sunday. See, awesome! Like I said. Awesome.

Stay tuned next week for another awesome person. Maybe it's you! Probably not, though. I'm just being honest; I don't want to get your hopes up.

I just saw a trailer for a new Adam Scott film called The Vicious Kind. It looks fab. That is all.

The Paper Chase

For the past few days, I've been avidly listening to The Paper Chase.

This is a fantastically bizarre music video for my favourite song, Said The Spider To The Fly:

Okay, who killed Toby?

Facts:

1. Clue was always my favourite board game. I loved the opportunity to be clever and trump everyone else with my cleverness. Take that, I win!

2. The Office is one of my favourite TV shows. I like both the original and American versions, depending on my mood. But, really, Dwight and Pam and Jim and Micheal and the whole Dunder Mifflin gang really hold a special place in my paper-y heart.

3. This is therefore the greatest invention ever:

And I totally bought it.
